News from Sharon Gless

Dearest Bloggers -

I sound like Rosie O'Donnell, don't I? In my dreams. :) I wish I were that articulate. But I will do my best.

First, my husband, Barney, says you should never start anything with an apology, but I feel one is due, as I do tend to disappear into my life, and have not been very attentive to you - who mean a great deal to me. And for that I DO apologize. Forgive me?

I have spent the last several months in Miami shooting my series, "Burn Notice" for USA Networks. We finished our 2nd year (the second half of which will air starting in January). It was a very fun time, the ratings are wonderful - the demographics range from age 10 to age 80 - and we have just been picked up for our 3rd season, which I will start shooting in March. (Hopefully, if there IS an actors' strike, it will be over by then.)

My last day of shooting, Tyne Daly surprised me at the door of my dressing room. (Carole Smith was the "angel" who brought her to me). I took Tyne into the set, and I have never heard a crew go that quiet! They were in absolute awe. I pointed out to them that they never pay ME that kind of respect.:)

I still love working, and happily, they still let me do it. I went from "Burn Notice" to a brief shoot in Los Angeles, in Ed Harris' new movie, "Once Fallen." I only shot 2 days on it, but I wanted to work with Amy Madigan, who is fabulous, and all my scenes were with her. I played an old lesbian in a wheel chair who lives in a trailer park next door to Amy. We had such a good time. It is a drama, and she and I laughed for 2 days.

The next day I flew to Chicago to do a wonderful little film called "Hannah Free", written by the fabulous lesbian playwright, Claudia Allen. Claudia has written almost 30 plays (one of which I performed in 2000 called "Cahoots"), and this is the first one that has been transferred to film. And guess what I played - go ahead, guess - you got it - an aging lesbian who is stuck in a wheel chair!!.

It was fabulous - I played the title role - Hannah Free - with a group of wonderful Chicago actors. It was very low budget, and the response to it has been so favorable that they are raising the $ now for distribution. It spans the 70-year relationship of 2 women. It is funny and sometimes sad, and very timely considering the politics affecting the gay community today in the US. There was an actress playing me at 30 and one playing me at 10. I played Hannah from 50-80. I felt very old but had a wonderful time.

I just finished that last week, which brings you up to date. Tomorrow I have surgery on my hand which is going to keep me somewhat incapacitated for 3 weeks. The surgery and the economy will keep me out of the stores this Christmas. I am giving every member of my family a sheep or a llama or some bunnies or a goat or a pig or some honeybees. What????

I made a donation to the Heifer Society and you can pick different animals (in your family member's name) that will go to families in third-world countries (not to be eaten - that would be too weird) so that they can breed them, sheer them, etc. to sustain their families. Good, eh? I recommend it.:)

And on that note, I will close (and rest) with my love to each one of you - and to your families. I hope your holidays are warm and filled with laughter.

Thanksgiving has passed now, but I am going to back up a week just to tell you how grateful I am that you are all in my life. That has never changed. Nor will it ever.

My love to you all.

Always, Sharon

  7. Hi Sharon from another UK fan. Thanks for posting. Great to hear that we will be able see so much of you on screen but sorry to hear about your hand. Get well soon.

I'm old enough to have watched and loved C&L first time around but I've been watching the early morning re-runs here - what a great way to start the day! Years ago I loved you and Tyne, your characters, the humour, the show's music etc. This time I been struck by how wonderful the stories are - you were so brave and thoughtful and sensitive in the stories you told and how you told them. They are more relevant now than ever - sadly maybe that shows that we don't learn much. And the shots of contemporary New York are fantastic. They could make a special of those alone.
Do come over to the UK again soon. We always love to have you here. Happy Christmas to you and your family and much respect and love.

  8. Hey Sharon! It was great to read what you have been up to. I have heard the the Heifer Society. As a matter of fact, my youth group at church, before I became one of the leaders, did the Heifer Project as their mission project one year. They did very well with it.
Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and hope all goes well with your surgery. Have a wonderful and blessed Christmas and Happy, Healthy, New Year.

  9. Oh CRAP!! Sharon was in Chicago Nov 9th and I missed her. Somebody just shoot me now and save me from my own brutal beating. I so would have gone to meet not only Sharon but to support, what sounds to be a great film. I have desired to meet both Sharon and Tyne since I was 10 years old and discovered I had an addictive personality by never missing an episode of the ever classic C&L.
Monday nights at 9:00 CST I was plopped in front of the boob tube with a demand for silence for one hour. This was not hard since I am an only child but nonetheless, my poor mother had to witness her only child at the age of 10 suffer from an obsessive compulsive disorder. :)

  12. Great to see you posting, Sharon. Rosie would be proud... :) Thanks for keeping us up to date on your projects - I'm definitely looking forward to seeing your work. Love anything with Ed Harris and Amy Madigan is wonderful (I've really enjoyed her as Meredith's therapist on "Grey's Anatomy").

I seem to remember you've done some terrific work in a wheelchair before. Don't remember the name of the "C&L" episode with James Stacy now, but it was one of the best - and that's saying something.

Hope all went well with your hand surgery. Take care and have a wonderful holiday season.

  17. Hello I am Mercedes from Argentina. I used to watch Cagney and Lacey as a teenager and I grew up admiring Cagney. Only some days ago I found that I can watch bits of C&L on the internet, and I found so many things about Sharon Gless the actress and person and it is funny because you are a stranger but at the same time you are or were very important for a growing girl in Buenos Aires. I am 35 years old now and I feel very stupid saying this because I am not the "fan" style, but Sharon you were very important for me and I still feel identified in many ways with your Cagney character and with the battles that you have had in your personal life (as I have learned these days reading in internet). Best wishes, Mercedes.

  27. I am writing this but staying anonymous. I wanted you to know something. I know everyone has a story about why Cagney and Lacey was important to them. so here is mine.
As a youngster around 11 years old my parents never came home very often as they were both drinkers and didnt care much for anyone apart from themselves. being in and out of care and feeling like i belonged no where. i was a very unhappy little girl. then Cagney and Lacey came along. Apart from the fact that by aged 12/13 i was so in love with Chris cagney i couldnt think straight ( no pun intended ) they gave me a reason to live. where there had been no hope before. faithfully every week Cagney and Lacey where there and so was i. you all saved the life of a young lass who had nothing. i am now a grown up and have loads of reasons to be glad to be alive but i will never forget how the show made me feel. how important you all were to me.
if anyone says that tv does not influence a young person then take it from me, they are wrong. long comment i know. but i would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. all of you. though Chris was the coolest eh. xxxxxx
