MY BLOG WEDNESDAY JUNE 27TH

Dear Blog Busters? Bunnies? Brave People?

It is Sharon. Yeahhhh!!

I am on my way to New York, then London, and then back to New York to catch Rosie O'Donnell's cruise. Life is good.

The series I am shooting, "Burn Notice," will premiere this Thursday night on USA Network at 10:00PM EST. It's the 90 minute pilot with NO commercials. Don't blink, you may miss me, but the star of the show, Jeffrey Donovan, is wonderful!! Then the following week starts the one-hour episodes. I say more in those :) :) Oh, Jeff and I will be on The Today Show this Thursday morning (June 28th). I dunno what time. NBC.

For the viewers in England - Tyne Daly and I are headed your way next week. We are coming over to do The Graham Norton Show on the BBC. We will be his only guests on
the 4th of July (not your favorite holiday). I imagine he is going to roast us good. I am ready!

We will shoot it on the 4th of July, but it will not air until the 5th of July. The tickets are free, so anyone who wants to come and see it, call the BBC I guess. Then ask for The Graham Norton Show. It would be nice having friends in the audience to cheer us on while we're dodging bullets from Graham. I'm kidding -- I've done his show before -- without Tyne -- and he is lovely -- and very very funny as you know.

So that's it for now - I will close up my suitcase and head across the pond.

This is sent with love,

Sharon

  1. Hi Sharon!

Thanks for posting and keeping all of your fans in the loop. I also want to thank you for the fabulous book/DVD signing event in NYC in May. I had waited 25 years to meet my favorite female detectives! You, Tyne, and Barney were all so very warm, friendly, and welcoming.

    Good luck across the Pond!

  4. Hello Sharon! I am soooo excited that you are visiting us in the UK. I'm also very peeed off that I can't make it to the Graham Norton show...I don't think they will allow my 14 year old daughter in, who also happens to be huge fan so I couldn't possibly come without her. So looks like another night in front of the TV...at least there will finally be something great to watch!!! The C&L DVD's were released this week and I waded through the floods to get them haha.I have waited so long for them now I can't wait for the next lot! I do hope there will be more soon. I love reading your blog and look forward to the next.

  10. Hi Sharon,

I am a big fan of Cagney & Lacey. Well, Christine Cagney might had some role to play in me joining the Police Force of my country. The TV series weren't aired in my country. I had to view it from the TV station of a neighbouring country.... sad ya?

Well, we kind of share the same ... workaholic, crazy, cranky sometimes and funny. My proudest moment was that I made Superintendent of Police at 38 yrs old. Same age Cagney made Sgt (2nd whip of the 14th). Many thanks for the great TV series. It was an inspiration then, and still is today. Love it.

Thanks Sharon for giving us Sgt Cagney. What inspires me most about being a police officer is that it’s real.

  11. Hi Sharon

I only found this site a few days ago! How great.
Applied for Graham Norton tickets immediately. There's a waiting list, fingers crossed.
I edited a "Soaps" magazine in the 80s and made sure the programme was featured!
Am hoping to bring the actual issue with me on the night!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Ms Gerry (and anyone else in the UK in a similar position),

You may want to consider calling Standing Room Only (the folk who allocate the tickets for the Graham Norton show) and ensure they know you edited the Soaps magazine and that you have a copy you could bring with you.

You might find you are allocated a waiting list ticket on a priority basis as they told me they are looking for fans with a connection to Sharon and Tyne to participate in the show. I don't know if they already have a full allocation of people in that category ... but there's nothing to be lost by trying, and possibly a ticket to be gained!

    Their number is 020 8684 3333.

Hope this is helpful - and good luck!

  14. Here's one happy Dutch girl in New York!

Gosh, who would have thought back in the eighties I would ever blog with the actress from my favorite tv-show ever? And how could I have imagined that some day Id be running the same streets of New York as my favorite TV-duo! Weew! Boy, did I have a crush on Christine Cagney back then :) (Yeah right, quite pathetic, falling for a tv-character, but in my defence: I was just a depressed teenager and guess it shows how you made your character come alive like a credible, real life woman. Take it as a compliment.)

Just earlier this week I had a giggle, remembering Cagney and Lacey as I was 'entering Queens' (couldn't remember which one of the cops was living there though) and a big grin on my face walking the streets of New York, humming the C&L tune because I was rushing and my surroundings reminded me very much of the C&L clip. Back home it made me search the internet to see if there were any reruns of the show on tele right now: how I would love to see some episoded while Im here! Shocked as I was to find out that your national tv does do reruns of *M*A*S*H*, Seinfeld, Columbo, Friends and Frasier, but not of my favorite C&L series, I couldn't hold back my joy a few minutes later discovering this website & blog.
Good on you girls! Be out there & blog your way into the sky.

Guess I will have to save up some money now to buy the C&L DVD-box. (And back in Amsterdam, probably catch up with modern media-times and finally buy one of those DVD-players as well then :) Oh, well.)

Have to go now. I have just two months in New York doing an internship (started late with my academic career) and theres still so many things to explore in this amazing, thrilling town.
Any chance to catch a glimps of the two of you in NYC before August 2nd? Will you be doing a TV-show or any other promotional work this month? Whats this Rosie O'D. cruise? Does Graham Norton air in US as well?

Anyway: keep enjoying your life to the fullest and thank you so much for all those wonderful tv-years in the past. You made a little sunbeam touch my gray life back then & made tough times look just a bit lighter. No kidding. Tv can do that.

With gratitude & warm, loving feelings,

    Judith

  15. Y'all come back now, y'hear? No defecting to England or Canada. You're a national treasure.

Sorry, can't think of much else to say-- just read Barney's letter earlier & it made me sad. But perhaps the UK fans will bolster DVD sales enough for MGM to consider releasing subsequent seasons. Meanwhile, love & adoration to you for thinking of us-- that really is the greatest gift.

  17. Graham Norton show was hilarious - you were both so funny I was so proud to be a fan and the other half had been taking the pee because of my 'slight' C&L obsession but he enjoyed the show almost as much as I did - he even laughed out loud which is a rare event! Sharon you look as lovely as ever and I still have a major crush on you (aren't you the lucky one?! lol) xxx

Only just found your blog..GREAT ! I watched you and Tyne on the Graham Norton show. Thought you both looked great and you were both funny. It brought back great memories seeing you both on TV again.
I loved C&L back then and still do now. I also enjoyed Trials of Rosie O'Neill and Tyne in Judging Amy.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

  21. Hi Sharon
Watched the Graham Norton show last night and was delighted to see that both yourself and Tyne held your own admirably!!

After the show finished, I turned over to see that "The Star Chamber" was being shown, have you noticed that the actress playing your mother in that film wears almost identical glasses to the ones you were wearing?!!!

Hope the UK can boost DVD sales enough for series 2 to be produced.

    Best regards

  22. Hey, I watched the DVD's all in about two days and nights I might add and my kids loved it too. I watched the featurette part and was stunned to realize that there really was no show like C&L. So I got thinking "Why Not" There must be some ideas out there. There is certainly the audience. So I came up with a short synopsis of my own. I don't know if it's any good but Ideas have got to start somewhere, Cagney and Lacey did. I'll send you the synopsis I wrote if your interested, email me, resre@hotmail.com

  23. Young Sharon, are you there?

Greetings from Britain, somewhere in the middle, and avoiding extremes of weather - although earlier I had the heat on, and now I have the door wide open. Go figure! (I am not in menopause!! I am 32...and a bit...a big bit.)

I have posted a piece of weirdness of Tyne's blog: I have asked if you would like to be the new British queens? Going on the assumption that because we had two queens before (Betty and Margaret), that this would be no bother. Old Betty has been doing it for too long, she may want to hang up her jewelled hat. We have always 'got' Cagney and Lacey over here, so you are most welcome. Also, we are not as polite as the Americans think - we are verbally subversive, although our accents may confuse.

I shall be purchasing the DVD set, broke as I am (student), and hope that gives the powerful ones the incentive to cough up the next series, as my tapes are a bit 'wonky' now after all this time. Doesn't help when they accidentally get knocked off the table and go crashing to the floor, but still, the DVDs are here to soothe the pain of poor handling techniques!

You are very cool! Hope you get to do what you like in life and work.

    Fiona

PS Don't forget to call the palace. You can clear out the old junk should you prefer something more minimalist!

  24. Hi Sharon!
I went to the Graham Norton taping on 4th July and both you & Tyne were FANSTASIC! A really good night - you ladies were well worth waiting 25 years to see. As an added bonus, just after we got home from the studio, Star Chamber was on so I watched that until the early hours.
    Enjoy the cruise!

  25. Sharon,
What a treat to discover this website & especially your blog. Reading it, I am reminded of the fact that about 23 years ago, I wrote my first (and only) "fan letter" to a celebrity - you. How gracious you were to write a nice note in return and include an autographed photo. I still have them, and treasure that gesture even more in today's world of celebrity.
Watched the 1st episode from the C&L DVD's tonight. Just hearing the theme song again brought back memories of Monday nights in my college dorm, anticipating each new episode. Somewhere in my parents' house are boxes of Beta Max & VHS tapes that I used to tape old episodes on! Thank God for DVD's and Amazon.com!
Burn Notice was fabulous last night, too! Loved you in the 2nd episode - you got more airtime! Yeah! My husband and I cracked up at the Cagney & Lacy reference, too! Was that your idea?
Thank you for sharing your gift with us; we fans are indeed the lucky ones.
    Be well,
    Annemarie

I've caught the first two episodes of "Burn Notice" and they're great but what's even better is how good you look! Girl you are as beautiful as ever, funny how as the C & L boxed set comes out, you look as you did 25 years ago. Just Beautiful! I wish I could be on the cruise with you. Q as F forever!

  27. Hi Sharon, Wow, wow and more wow. I've just managed to catch you and Tyne on Sunday's replay of the Graham Norton show and thank god I did. First of all, I have to say how great you both look, not to mention how funny you are. I haven't laughed so much in ages.
I thoroughly enjoyed my flashback through time and explaining to my 12 year old daughter how fantastic your show was when I was her age. It was the best show in the 80's. I loved every minute of it. In fact, she is now begging me to get the dvd, which of course I will be doing as soon as I can.
Anyway, just want to say thanks ever so much for making Cagney & Lacey such an amazing show. Cant wait for the next series on dvd (the better ones, as Tyne put it!!!) Take care for now and look forward to reading your next blog.
    Much love
    Michelle, Leeds, UK.
PS. If I'd have realised my crush on you was exactly what it was, I may have realised my sexuality a bit sooner than I did! You're still one sexy lady too!

  30. Sharon, I was part of the C&L Global Tribute Kazoo Band on the phone to the Graham Norton Show. Just so you know which one was me... I was the BEST one, the one with the most obvious talent, the one with lips MADE for the Kazoo!!! :)

Still waiting to see the show here in the U.S. I'm wondering if any fans who were at the taping might be able to answer something for me? Karen, my friend of twenty-two years (thanks to C&L!), and I were on the phone from Dallas. The producer had suggested that Karen (one of the club - I'm an honorary member but play for the other team) say that she thought (in so many words) Chris and Mary-Beth should have been an "item" and - a funny line of her own making - it could have been the C & "L-word". That part, along with some others, were edited from the program (we've seen this bit on YouTube). When on the phone we could hear both Sharon and Tyne saying something (I think Tyne was saying ALOT of something!) but couldn't make it out. Any of you lucky audience members remember what it might have been? Sharon??? :)

Hope the cruise was a blast. Oh - and I was happy to see more of you on "Burn Notice" last week!

  31. The Graham Norton show was a sad event. I have as good a sense of humour as anyone , but this was just tacky and trivial . Anyone who didn't know about the wonderful show 'Cagney and Lacey' would be certainly no wiser after this . No-one will be viewing this 25 years later .

  38. Hi Ms. Sharon. I don't know if you really read these comments but I thought I might share with you a song I wrote when I first started watching Cagney and Lacey so many years ago. I wrote Mr. Barney ane Ms. Tyne to share it with them as well. It shows my youth in the writing and I really was surprised I remembered all the words. I had a good laugh and maybe you will too.
    Thanks for the fabulous memories.

What follows are my lyrics to the opening song to Cagney and Lacey:
Let me tell you a story about a young and wild and carefree city.
There ain't no place at all like,
Here on the streets of New York City
    You gotta be armed
To think of what to do in a split second,
You gotta know the do's and dont's
On the highways, byways, alleyways of the road.
Here on the streets of New York City
Murder drugs and rape run like honey
Cleaning up, you need more than a few honey bees
But no matter where you go,
    You'll see a smiling face
That will brighten up your day
And make you wanna give a hay
But a laugh a day is not
Gonna make the the street crime
    Some how go away.
The live on the streets of New York City
You gotta be cold, bold, yes very city
    Street smarts,
A little bit of the country charms
    Are the ways.
    Dedication is a must.
You gotta do it over and over and over,
    Till you get it right.

Years ago when Cagney and Lacey began I was so inspired I wrote a song. When I got the dvd collection recently I was surprised I remembered it. It shows my youth in writing but you may get a tickle out of it. I did. Thanks for the fabulous memories.

  44. Dear Sharon - you recently said in an interview that you ' don't ever remember being that young ' . Well Sharon - that's just it - you will ALWAYS be that young whenever we watch - forever . You are so beautiful it hurts . Is that sexist / Well - my apologies then . Tyne was fabulous , and I love her - but Your performance as cagney was so subtle - building slowly , never faltering , to an incredible climax of near breakdown and then recovery . Tyne shouted out loud - you made us look harder - and we found more in the raise of an eyebrow , or a look , or one of your dozens of different smiles - each one clearly labelled . How the hell did you do that ?
You are incredible in C & L. Its a true work of art - God Bless .

  45. Dear Sharon - a quick ps to my last comment . I am a great Jimi Hendrix fan - and would like to think I would not shout out for 'Hey Joe' , were Jimi still playing concerts . It must be tough in a way for people always going on about an actors ( I always call women actors by the way ) past performances . But - C & L was your Hey Joe I suppose . Its just that good.
Barney is right in the book about cut-aways etc . I didn't really get chance to see you in ' The State Within ' - yes , I watched all of it , but the camera wasn't still long enough to see anybody act . They haven't a clue how to make drama these days . ( yes I'm over 50 ! ) Oh well - I'll watch another episode of C & L .

  46. Hi Sharon,
Just saw you guest starring in one of the reruns of judging Amy we have here in Holland. So good to see you again too.
I was a big fan of Cagney and Lacey.Back in those years women were often portrayed as wimps shrieking and crying so that a strong man could save them.
And then came your series, two feisty women at last.Real three dimensional characters who lead real lives with it's ups and downs and allways somehow got thrue it. I still can remember so many great scenes. Thank you very much for giving me such great role models! Thanks for a beautiful acting job. I allways wondered how you were doing. Thanks for taking the time to participate on this website and letting us know how you are doing now. I am happy to read you are all doing fine. My best wishes to you and whole the crew.

  47. It is great to have discovered this blog. I was 7 years old when Cagney and Lacey premiered on TV. It was inspirational to see women on TV with strength and dominance. Cagney and Lacey were not like the women I grew up around but I knew they were who I wanted to grow up to be like.

I am glad to hear of your continued success. I recently caught a first few episodes of Burn Notice and am really enjoying the show. I also recently saw you in Girl Next Door on Lifetime Network. Loved it! Best wishes on all your upcoming stage endeavors!

  48. Hi Sharon!

I was so glad to hear about your appearance on the Graham Norton Show. I attempted to watch it around the 5th of July in Denver. I'm not sure when it actually aired, because I missed the original airing. However, as a coincidence, I was able to catch it this afternoon (8-12-07) on a Marathon showing of the GN Show. I laughed so hard...he is a very funny man and so were you and Tyne. In fact, Tyne really surprised me. I knew you had a funny streak, but I can't say that I ever really remember seeing it in Tyne before. She rather played the straight gal role to your funny gal role on C&L! She was really funny on the GN Show.

On C&L you often reminded me of Lucy...remembering one of the episodes celebrating the retirement for Lt Samuels. I always thought you would have been so funny doing comedy....you proved it in your role as Debbie in QAF. I know it wasn't a comedic role, but you so often made me laugh. I've seen it again, most recently in Burn notice, too!

I purchased the DVD-1st season recently (through B&N, incidentally!) and have loved every episode. Believe it or not, I have all of the episodes on tape, having recorded many of them in reruns! I'm so glad they have come out on DVD...and in chronological order! I sure hope the rest of them will be released in the near future, as I'm sure my collection (including the reunion movies) dating back many years may not survive the test of time.

I have continued to watch you and your career through the years....even sent you a Dr. Suess book, "Oh The Places You'll Go," after your Golden Globe win for The Trials of Rosie O'Neill many years ago and oh the places you have gone! I have loved them all, to your most recent role in Burn Notice.

Congratulations on the release of the DVDs, Barney's book and everything you have planned for the future. I'll be watching! Guaranteed!

    A forever fan...Georgia

  49. I am the biggest Cagney and Lacey fan and found this site after catching up with the 25th anniversary stuff on YouTube. Christine Cagney was my inspiration and my favorite fictional character, along with Bridget Jones (which is actually my autobiography, ha). Point is, watching the show while just starting out, my friends and I knew, as women, that we could be whatever we wanted to be...a Cagney or a Lacey. Keep blogging, Rosie will help you.

  50. Hi to all you C&L fans.
I'm English, living in France but happily watching ALL the C&L reruns on ITV3 through Sky!! They don't make 'em like that anymore. INSPIRED writing (CC: "...so what if she's deaf, I've got cystitis, we've all got our problems ...... ") played by TRULY FANTASTIC actors making you cry one minute then laugh out loud minutes later. That's not a talent many actors are gifted with. Well done Sharon & Tyne!

Sharon, loved you in 'Chapter Two' in London a few years ago with Tom Conti and can't wait for your next theatre plans with 'A Well Heeled Woman' (fingers crossed).
    Keep us updated won't you?

Look after yourself 'cos whatever you're doing sure is working !
    A bientôt!

  55. Hi Sharon,
I want you to know how much I have enjoyed your work through the years. I was an avid C&L fan, and am now enjoying being able to watch the first season DVD's.

I've posted a few times on Barney's Blog, and I hope you don't mind me repeating this message here. I really would like to see the other seasons released. Not only does Cagney and Lacey represent quality work by you and Tyne, but also real value as ground-breaking TV. I'm hoping we can mobilize the kind of support that brought C&L back this first time!

My best to you and Tyne and your families and friends! Keep up the fantastic work!

    Here's the other opost:
I have been trying to think of special interest groups that we can target to help with a letter writing/email writing campaign. Now that schools are back in session, I believe we have a huge resource in the Women's Studies Departments across the country - and in other countries. (I've seen many of the posters from England and other countries world-wide.

Here are some urls where there contact information is listed for hundreds of schools in every state of the U.S.:

FOR: women’s studies programs, departs and research centers ---
    http://userpages.umbc.edu/~korenman/wmst/programs.html

FOR: alphabetical guide to women’s studies dept and contacts for U.S. Colleges and Universities:
    http://www.artemisguide.com/

I also found the National Women’s Studies Association at:
    http://www.nwsa.org/

I believe if we can get enough of these departments and groups to put notices in their newsletters, bulletin boards - or even make announcements in their classes - we can get the type of letter response needed to prove to MGM they have a market for the remaining seasons of Cagney and Lacey.

I tried to find the contact information for the Viewers for Quality Television - the original group that formed and helped launch the letter writing campaign that brough C&L back to TV. The founder was Dorothy Collins Swanson. The group disbanned but another was formed under Viewers for Quality Teevee (new url) but I didn't find contact info on their new site.

Anyone with more info about this group or who has the contact email, can you please provide it?

Let's keep plugging. If we can mobilize some of these large groups, we'll get the response we want.

  57. Deb, in answer to your question about VQT, I believe I read that they disbanded a few years ago, due to funding issues. Here's a link to one article:

[Note: Copy that whole link as one line - tried to post it as such here, but there's no wraparound, so it cuts off.]

P.S. Sharon, we'd love to hear what you're up to~ are you going to keep posting here?

  60. Sharon,

I was so happy to meet you yesterday (September 21st). You were so nice. Actually, everyone on that flight was, despite the troubles we had. I am always appreciative of any happy group of people when they are stuck in a metal tube during long delay situations. Sometimes, when it rains it pours, and yesterday it poured.

I am not sure this will get to you, but I wanted to address why I was taken back by the question of which character I recognized. I honestly didn't know at that moment. Initially I knew you from Cagney & Lacey, but I knew other places as well.

Had I figured out you were Debbie Novotny, You probably would have had a fanatic fan on your hands!

That character really did a lot for the gay community. You played the Mom we all wish we had. My mother was great, but, few are as vocal and compassionate as that character.

So, I will just say thank you. I hope things work out for you up here.

My blog site is: The Mind of a Flight Attendant and I usually post from wherever I am in the world...if your interested.

Again, it was great meeting you.

    Nick

  61. Please can I use this space to warn C & L fans - do NOT buy DVD's from DVDavenue/tv addicts or similar . Complete sets of all C & L series are being offered -Unfortunately I did buy them , and they are very poor quality . The original source was obviously recorded from tv broadcasts onto video tape , complete with commercials and station logos . Some discs do not even play . looking at complaints across the internet - you will NOT get your money back - beware !

  66. Dear mrs Sharon Gless,

How are you and your family doing? Fine i hope. I am doing ok. I am just getting over streep throat. I have been told that Burn Notice might be moving to channel 10 here in Michigan this summer when it starts again. Because of the show monk. Is that true or false. Hope all is well with you and your family. Take and god bless you.

    Your fan always,

    Amy From Jackson, Michigan

  67. Hi Sharon, It's great that there is a blog for people to post to.

They are doing re-runs in england with cagney and lacey on free view Tv. And so my fiancee Bee and i are watching them together.

She first saw your series in German, i wonder what that was like?:-) Bee said she prefers your voices in english. But i heard they do quite a good similar voice with the german one.

4th of july? I personally dont mind the day. I think it's important that all countries have the freedom to live as they wish, without being told what to do.

we are greatful that you and Tyne are on our screens, it is a joy to watch.

  68. Hi Sharon

I know it's a long time ago now, but I never got the chance to thank you for the beautiful big signed photo, you sent me in the 80's. I'm 39 now and still treasure it to this day. My friend and I were at school then, I am blonde, she is brunette, we made replica badges and ran around like idiots pretending to be Cagney & Lacey !!! It was very popular over here. It's funny to look back on our antics now.

I am with St Andrews Ambulance now and funnily enough, I prefer to work with a male partner, although you have to be prepared to take some stick lol.

Well I'll close here, but wish you all the best !!!

    Love from Scotland

    Meg xx

    Ahem....come on Sharon......Its July 2008 !!!! Get Blogging lol
